Professional coverstitching with less threading fuss

The BERNINA L 620 is a dedicated coverstitch and chainstitch machine designed for polished hems, bindings, topstitching and garment details. It is an excellent companion to a sewing machine or overlocker when you want the flexible, flat finish commonly seen on ready-to-wear T-shirts, activewear, knit dresses, leggings and underwear.

Its illuminated One-Step BERNINA Air Threader handles the looper thread, while an integrated needle threader assists with the needle threads. Colour-coded, consistent threading paths make changing between stitch configurations more approachable, leaving you more time to sew and less time preparing the machine.

  • Seven coverstitch and chainstitch combinations
  • Illuminated One-Step BERNINA Air Threader for the looper thread
  • Integrated needle threader
  • 3 mm and 6 mm coverstitch widths
  • Adjustable differential feed for smooth seams, controlled gathering and stretch fabrics
  • BERNINA Free Hand System with knee lifter and feed-dog drop
  • Programmable needle-stop position and stitch-by-stitch control
  • 120 mm of space to the right of the needles
  • Slide-on table and matching coverstitch insert included
  • Maximum sewing speed of 1,200 stitches per minute

What can you make with the BERNINA L 620?

The L 620 gives dressmakers and garment makers a purpose-built way to create flexible hems and decorative details without relying on a twin needle in a conventional sewing machine. Suitable applications include:

  • Hemming T-shirts, tops, knit dresses, leggings and children’s clothing
  • Finishing activewear, sportswear, swimwear and lingerie
  • Topstitching neckbands, cuffs, waistbands and elastic
  • Applying suitable bindings and creating decorative stitch lines
  • Flat joining seams in stretch garments
  • Attaching elastic or elastic lace
  • Chainstitching woven and slightly stretchy fabrics
  • Topstitching, appliqué, decorative work and temporary basting
  • Working with suitable decorative thread for visible garment details

Seven useful stitch combinations

The stitch selection covers the key formations expected from a dedicated coverstitch machine:

  • One 4-thread coverstitch: A flat, highly flexible stitch made with three needles and one looper thread. It is suited to wide hems, flat joining, elastic application and decorative work.
  • Three 3-thread coverstitch configurations: Choose wide or narrow needle arrangements to suit the scale of the hem, fabric and design.
  • Three 2-thread chainstitch configurations: Useful for joining, binding, topstitching, appliqué and easily removable basting.

Coverstitch width can be set to 3 mm or 6 mm, while stitch length is adjustable from 1.5 to 5 mm. Thread tension, stitch length and differential feed can be adjusted while sewing, helping you fine-tune the result for different fabrics and threads.

Easy looper and needle threading

The One-Step BERNINA Air Threader draws the looper thread through the threading channel using air. It is operated with the foot control, allowing both hands to remain available for placing the thread at the nozzle. The threading area is illuminated so that you can clearly see when the air-threading function is active.

The air system threads the looper ; the needle threads are handled separately with the integrated needle threader. Clearly marked, colour-coded paths help keep setup consistent across the available stitches, and the machine can be threaded in any sequence.

Control the machine your way

A powerful DC motor provides control across the full speed range, from careful stitch-by-stitch work to a maximum of 1,200 stitches per minute. The speed slider lets you reduce the machine’s top speed for detailed work, curves or unfamiliar fabrics.

The BERNINA foot control includes a back-kick function for needle up/down control. You can also program whether the needles should stop up or down, making it easier to pivot, reposition the fabric or remove a finished project.

Hands-free fabric positioning

BERNINA’s Free Hand System uses the included knee lifter to raise or temporarily lower the presser foot while your hands remain on the project. Operating the knee lifter also lowers the feed dogs, creating extra room for positioning fabric under the foot.

A two-step presser-foot lifter provides additional clearance for thicker intersections or multiple layers. The presser foot can also swing out to the side for easier needle changing, threading and access beneath the foot, then return to position when lowered with the hand lifter.

Differential feed for better fabric handling

The adjustable differential feed range of 0.7 to 2 helps manage how the fabric moves through the machine. Correct adjustment can reduce unwanted waviness in knit hems, minimise puckering in finer materials or create intentional gathering effects.

Presser-foot pressure is also adjustable through three settings. As fabric type, thread and construction can all affect the finished stitch, we recommend testing on a folded offcut containing the same number of layers as the final garment.

A generous, well-lit workspace

The L 620 provides 120 mm of room to the right of the needles and an 83 mm workspace height. The included slide-on table supports larger garments and long hems, while the matching coverstitch insert adds seam-guide markings for keeping stitching aligned with a folded edge.

The sewing light can be switched off or dimmed to suit your workspace. An additional air-threader light illuminates the threading area, and a magnetic tool holder keeps small metal tools close at hand.

Included accessories

BERNINA’s standard L 620 package information lists the following accessories. Final Australian inclusions should be confirmed with Two Petals before dispatch, as regional packages can change.

  • Clear Cover/Chainstitch Foot #C28
  • Slide-on table
  • Looper cover with built-in coverstitch insert
  • Coverstitch insert for the slide-on table
  • BERNINA foot control with back-kick function
  • Free Hand System knee lifter
  • BERNINA tweezers
  • Manual needle threader/inserter
  • Assorted ELx705 CF needle set
  • Cleaning brush
  • Screwdriver
  • Spool nets, spool caps and spool stabilisers
  • Separate tool and accessory box
  • Dust cover

The included transparent #C28 foot provides a clear view of the stitch-forming area, which is helpful when following a folded hem, sewing tubular garments or aligning decorative topstitching.

Compatibility guidance

Needles

The standard package includes ELx705 CF needles. Select the needle point and size to match your fabric and follow the machine manual when purchasing replacements. If you are unsure whether a particular ELx705 variation is suitable, contact Two Petals before use.

Presser feet and attachments

The Clear Cover/Chainstitch Foot #C28 is supplied with the machine. BERNINA also identifies the Cover/Chainstitch Foot #C29 as a compatible optional foot for flat chainstitch sewing.

Standard BERNINA sewing-machine feet and accessories for other overlocker series should not be assumed to fit the L 620. Always check the exact model and part-number compatibility before ordering an optional foot, binder or guide. The Two Petals team can help you identify accessories intended for the L 620.

Threads and fabrics

The machine can be used with appropriate sewing and overlocking threads, including suitable decorative threads for selected applications. Thread size, needle selection and tension settings must be appropriate for the fabric. Test unfamiliar or heavier decorative threads before beginning the final project.

Is the L 620 a coverstitch machine or an overlocker?

The L 620 is a dedicated coverstitch and chainstitch machine . It does not trim fabric edges, sew overlock stitches or produce rolled hems. If you also need to cut and neaten raw edges while constructing garments, pair it with a machine from the BERNINA overlocker range .

A dedicated coverstitch model is a practical choice for sewists who already own an overlocker and would prefer to leave both machines threaded for their separate jobs. If you would rather have overlocking and coverstitching in one machine, compare it with the BERNINA L 890 overlocker and coverstitch combination machine .

Who is the BERNINA L 620 best suited to?

Consider the L 620 if you regularly sew stretch garments, want a dedicated machine for ready-to-wear hems, or are looking for an air-threading coverstitch model with precise low-speed control. It may be particularly useful for:

  • Home dressmakers who sew T-shirts, dresses, leggings or activewear
  • Experienced overlocker owners adding a separate coverstitch machine
  • Small clothing businesses and sewing studios
  • Sewists who value hands-free presser-foot control
  • Makers who want both practical and decorative coverstitch options
  • Anyone who prefers not to convert a combination machine between overlock and coverstitch setups

Frequently asked questions

Does the BERNINA L 620 cut and overlock fabric?

No. The L 620 is a dedicated coverstitch and chainstitch machine, so it does not have an overlocker cutting knife and does not sew traditional overlock or rolled-hem stitches. You will still need an overlocker if you want to trim and neaten raw edges in one operation.

Does the air threader thread all of the machine’s threads?

The One-Step BERNINA Air Threader threads the looper. The needle threads follow their colour-coded paths and are passed through the needle eyes with help from the integrated needle threader.

Can the L 620 hem T-shirts and leggings?

Yes. Stretchy coverstitches are well suited to knit hems, including T-shirts, leggings, dresses and activewear. Always test the stitch length, differential feed, presser-foot pressure and tension on a matching fabric offcut first.

Can it sew woven fabric?

Yes. The 2-thread chainstitch can be used for joining, topstitching, binding, appliqué and temporary basting on woven and slightly stretchy materials. Needle, thread and settings should be selected for the fabric weight and construction.

Is a coverstitch better than using a twin needle?

A twin needle in a conventional sewing machine can create a similar two-line appearance, but a true coverstitch uses a looper thread beneath the fabric to create a flatter, more flexible formation. A dedicated coverstitch machine is generally more convenient for people who frequently hem stretch garments, while occasional knit sewists may find a twin needle sufficient.

Can the L 620 sew slowly for detailed work?

Yes. Its DC motor, speed-selection slider and responsive BERNINA foot control support slow, controlled sewing and stitch-by-stitch operation. The back-kick function can also move the needles up or down by half a stitch.

Can I use my regular BERNINA sewing-machine feet on the L 620?

Do not assume that a foot designed for a conventional BERNINA sewing machine will fit. The L 620 uses coverstitch-specific feet and attachments. Check the exact accessory name, model compatibility and part number with Two Petals before ordering.

What needles does the BERNINA L 620 use?

An assorted ELx705 CF needle set is included. Refer to the L 620 manual for compatible sizes and points, or ask Two Petals to help select a needle for jersey, stretch, woven or heavier fabrics.

Does the L 620 include an extension table?

Yes. A slide-on table and matching coverstitch insert are listed as standard accessories. The insert includes seam-guide markings to help align hems and stitching with the fabric edge.

When is the BERNINA L 620 expected in Australia?

Two Petals currently expects pre-orders to arrive in mid-August 2026. This is an estimated arrival period rather than a guaranteed delivery date, and customers should confirm the latest information before placing or finalising an order.
