The Baby Lock Splendor BLSP8 combines advanced overlocking, chain stitching and coverstitching in one versatile 8-thread machine. Designed for garment makers, experienced home sewists and creative studios that want more stitch choice without maintaining two separate machines, it offers more than 60 stitch combinations, ExtraordinAir™ looper threading, Automatic Thread Delivery for overlocking and a practical 2-inch workspace to the right of the needle.

  • Overlocker and coverstitch machine in one: create finished seams, stretch hems, rolled edges, flatlocking, chain stitching and selected combination stitches.
  • ExtraordinAirâ„¢ looper threading: a burst of air carries thread through the tubular loopers at the press of a button.
  • Automatic Thread Delivery: select the required overlock stitch setting rather than manually balancing traditional tension dials.
  • More than 60 stitch combinations: including 2, 3 and 4-thread overlocking, safety stitches, coverstitches and high-thread-count combinations.
  • Made for garment work: differential feed, adjustable presser-foot pressure and multiple coverstitch options support knitwear, activewear and general dressmaking.
  • Hands-free fabric control: the included knee lifter raises the presser foot while your hands remain on the project.
  • Binder-ready coverstitch table: the included four-hole flat table accepts selected optional Baby Lock knit binders and attachments.
  • Local support: Two Petals provides in-house machine servicing and repairs from Pakenham in Melbourne’s south-east.

Professional overlocking and coverstitching from one machine

The Splendor is a combination machine rather than a conventional four-thread overlocker. Its independent overlock and chain/cover stitch systems can be used separately or combined, giving you a broad selection of construction and finishing techniques from one machine.

Use its overlock stitches to sew and neaten garment seams, produce narrow edge finishes, create rolled hems or add decorative flatlocking. Change to the chain/cover configuration for stretch hems, topstitching, decorative rows and chain-stitched seams. Selected combination settings bring overlocking and cover or chain stitching together for strong, wide seam finishes.

This versatility makes the Splendor particularly useful for sewing T-shirts, leggings, children’s clothing, activewear, dancewear, lingerie, casual garments and home-decor projects. It is also a practical choice for sewists who enjoy experimenting with decorative thread and expressive seam finishes.

ExtraordinAirâ„¢ threading for the loopers

Threading a multi-thread combination machine can be one of the biggest concerns for buyers. Baby Lock’s ExtraordinAir™ system simplifies the looper stage: insert the thread into the appropriate threading port, engage the system and press the button to send the thread through the tubular looper path with air.

The tubular loopers keep the threads separated inside the machine. They can be threaded in any order, and changing one looper thread does not require every other looper to be rethreaded. The air system applies to the loopers ; the needles are threaded manually with assistance from the supplied manual needle threader and colour-coded guide.

Automatic Thread Delivery for easier overlocking

Instead of asking the operator to balance several conventional tension dials for each overlock stitch, the Splendor uses Baby Lock’s Automatic Thread Delivery system. Select the appropriate stitch setting and the system meters the required amount of thread for the selected overlock formation.

This is especially useful when moving between different fabric weights or experimenting with decorative threads. Chain and coverstitch settings have their own setup requirements, so the instruction manual and quick-reference threading guide should still be followed whenever you change stitch configurations.

More than 60 stitch combinations

The Splendor provides a much broader range than a standard 3/4-thread overlocker. Available techniques include:

  • 4-thread overlock for durable stretch seams and everyday garment construction
  • 3-thread wide and narrow overlocking for seam finishing and lighter construction
  • 3-thread narrow hems and rolled edges
  • 2-thread overlock, flatlock, blanket and ladder-style finishes
  • 3-thread flatlock for joining, embellishment and sportswear-style seams
  • 4 and 5-thread safety stitches
  • Chain stitch in left, centre or right needle positions
  • Narrow 3mm coverstitch in left or right positions
  • Wide 6mm coverstitch
  • Triple 6mm coverstitch
  • Selected 6, 7 and 8-thread combination stitches
  • Expressive combination stitches measuring up to 16mm wide

These options can be used for practical construction or made into a visible design feature with contrasting or decorative thread.

Better fabric handling for knits and changing fabric weights

The differential feed adjusts from 0.6 to 2, helping you manage common overlocking problems such as stretched knit edges or puckering on lightweight woven fabrics. It can also be adjusted deliberately to gather fabric or create a lettuce-style edge, depending on the fabric and stitch setup.

An adjustable presser-foot pressure dial gives you another way to fine-tune feeding. The vertical needle system is designed to reduce needle deflection, while Baby Lock’s fabric support system helps maintain the stitch formation at the fabric edge.

For thicker materials, the machine provides up to 6mm of presser-foot clearance and a heavy-duty cutting system. Fabric composition, seam bulk, needle choice and thread still affect performance, so test the complete seam on a project offcut before sewing the finished garment.

Coverstitch workspace and attachment compatibility

The 2-inch space to the right of the needle offers useful room for cover hems, decorative stitching and other work performed away from a raw fabric edge. For chain and coverstitch sewing, fit the included flat sewing table after disengaging the cutting system as directed in the manual.

The table has four attachment holes and is compatible with selected Baby Lock knit binders and lap-seam accessories. This is valuable for making professionally bound necklines, armholes and garment edges. Binder compatibility is model- and size-specific, so confirm the exact attachment code with Two Petals before ordering.

The manufacturer also lists the Splendor as compatible with the Baby Lock CT-5 clear extension table. Optional presser feet and attachments are sold separately unless they are specifically listed as part of a current Two Petals package.

Convenient controls for detailed sewing

The included knee lifter lets you raise the presser foot without removing your hands from the fabric. This is helpful when positioning bindings, aligning cover hems, controlling curves or handling several garment layers.

The presser-foot lever is positioned on the right side of the machine, while four LED lights illuminate the needle and working area. Other practical features include a built-in side thread cutter, large accessory storage area, magnetic needle storage, needle-drop tray and a trim bucket that catches cut fabric and thread remnants.

Needles, thread and accessory compatibility

Which needles does it use?

The specified needle system is ELx705CF . A selection of Organ ELx705CF needles is included. Use the needle size recommended for your fabric and technique, and do not substitute a different needle system unless Baby Lock or an authorised technician confirms compatibility.

Can it use knit binders?

Yes. The supplied four-hole chain/cover table is designed for selected optional Baby Lock knit binders and related attachments. Compatibility depends on the exact binder model, finished binding width and application. Contact Two Petals before purchasing an attachment so the machine and attachment codes can be checked together.

Can I use decorative or textured thread?

The Splendor supports creative thread applications, but not every thread behaves like standard overlocking thread. Stretchy textured threads such as woolly nylon may not travel through an air-threading port reliably. Baby Lock supplies a looper threading tool for threads that need to be drawn through manually. Always follow the manual and test decorative threads before beginning a project.

Are optional feet included?

The standard package includes one flat-sole foot with ribbon and tape guides. Other feet, binders, hemmers, guides and tables are optional unless expressly shown in a current promotional package. Browse the Baby Lock overlocker and coverstitch range or ask Two Petals to check an accessory for BLSP8 compatibility.

Is the Splendor the right combination machine for you?

Consider the Splendor if you:

  • Want overlocking and coverstitching without finding permanent bench space for two machines
  • Sew stretch garments and want several professional cover-hem options
  • Want air-threaded loopers and simplified overlock thread delivery
  • Need more than the basic stitches available from a standard 3/4-thread overlocker
  • Plan to use binders, hemmers or specialist garment-making attachments
  • Value knee-lift control and a larger coverstitch working area
  • Want local setup advice, education, maintenance and repair support

Consider your workflow before choosing a combination model. Changing between overlock and coverstitch modes requires the correct needle positions, threading path, cutting-blade setting and sewing table. A combination machine saves space and enables multi-function stitches, but a sewist who changes between overlocking and cover hemming continually may prefer two permanently threaded machines.

If you are unsure which setup best matches your sewing, visit Two Petals in Pakenham or contact the team to discuss your usual fabrics, garment types, workspace and preferred attachments. One-on-one learning options can also be found in the Two Petals sewing classes range.

Warranty, servicing and long-term support

Baby Lock Australia provides a one-year parts-and-labour warranty against qualifying manufacturing defects. An additional four years of conditional parts-and-labour cover is offered for domestic overlocker and coverstitch purchases when the manufacturer’s registration and servicing conditions are met. Electronic components have separate limited-warranty terms.

Registration must be completed promptly after purchase, and scheduled servicing is required to maintain the conditional extended cover. Commercial, school and non-domestic use may have different terms. Please review the warranty information supplied with the machine and ask Two Petals to confirm the conditions that apply to your purchase.

Two Petals offers direct overlocker and coverstitch servicing in Melbourne’s south-east , helping you keep the machine cleaned, adjusted and maintained throughout its working life.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Baby Lock Splendor both an overlocker and a coverstitch machine?

Yes. It can sew overlock, chain and cover stitches separately and can also produce selected combination stitches using both systems.

Does ExtraordinAirâ„¢ thread the needles?

No. ExtraordinAirâ„¢ threads the loopers. The needles are threaded manually using the marked thread paths and the supplied manual needle-threading tool.

Does the Splendor have automatic tension?

For overlocking, it uses Baby Lock’s Automatic Thread Delivery system rather than conventional manual overlock tension dials. Chain and coverstitch configurations still require the appropriate settings shown in the manual and quick-reference guide.

Can it sew a coverstitch without trimming the fabric?

Yes. For cover and chain stitching, the cutting system is disengaged and the included flat sewing table is fitted according to the instructions.

Can it overlock and coverstitch in the same operation?

Yes, selected high-thread-count combination stitches use the overlock and chain/cover systems together. The available combinations include safety seams and wide decorative or construction stitches.

Is it suitable for sewing knit fabrics?

Yes. Differential feed, adjustable foot pressure, 3mm and 6mm coverstitches, triple coverstitch and optional knit binders make it well suited to stretch-garment construction. Results still depend on using the correct needle, thread and settings for the fabric.

Will it sew thick fabric?

The Splendor has a heavy-duty cutting system and up to 6mm of presser-foot clearance. This supports a broad range of fabric weights, but the practical limit depends on seam bulk, fabric density, needle choice and whether the project can feed safely beneath the foot. Test thick assemblies before sewing the final item.

How fast does it sew?

The maximum rated speed is up to 1,500 stitches per minute. This model does not provide a separate maximum-speed limiter, so speed is controlled with the electronic foot control.

Does it use standard domestic sewing-machine needles?

No. The specified system is ELx705CF. Use the correct system and an appropriate size for the project.

Can I attach a binder?

Yes, selected Baby Lock binders can mount to the included four-hole coverstitch table. Confirm the precise binder model and width before purchase rather than assuming every generic binder will fit.

Is an extension table included?

The compact four-hole chain/cover sewing table is included. The larger CT-5 clear extension table is a compatible optional accessory and is not part of the standard package unless expressly offered in a promotion.

Does the trim bucket need to be removed for rethreading?

The supplied trim bucket is designed to catch fabric and thread remnants while retaining access for routine threading and adjustments.

Does the Splendor completely replace two dedicated machines?

For many sewists, it can. It provides both major functions in one chassis and adds combination-stitch capability. However, changing modes requires reconfiguration, so high-volume users who alternate constantly between overlocking and coverstitching may find two permanently set-up machines more convenient.

Where can I see or service the Baby Lock Splendor in Melbourne?

Two Petals is located in Pakenham, Victoria. Contact the store to discuss demonstrations, collection, setup assistance, education or in-house servicing and repairs .
