Smart, Capable Sewing with More Creative Choice

The Brother Innov-is A150 Sewing Machine combines straightforward computerised controls with a generous selection of utility, stretch, quilting, decorative and lettering stitches. It is a practical step-up machine for dressmakers, quilters and creative home sewers who want more control and convenience without moving to an oversized or overly complicated model.

Choose from 150 built-in stitches using the electronic keypad, then view the selected stitch and settings on the LCD screen. Ten one-step buttonhole styles help you produce repeatable buttonholes sized to your button, while the machine’s lettering, stitch-combination, memory and mirror-image functions open up more ways to personalise labels, gifts, garments and homewares.

Everyday setup is simplified by the advanced one-action needle threader, quick-set drop-in bobbin and F.A.S.T. bobbin winding system. Once you begin sewing, the speed slider, needle up/down control, lock-stitch function, automatic reinforcement settings and automatic thread cutter help reduce repeated manual steps.

Why Choose the Brother Innov-is A150?

  • 150 built-in stitches: A broad selection for garment construction, repairs, stretch sewing, appliqué, quilting and decorative work.
  • 10 one-step buttonholes: Create consistent buttonholes automatically using the included buttonhole foot.
  • Four lettering styles: Includes three alphabet styles and one Japanese character style for stitched names, labels and personalisation.
  • Automatic thread cutting: Cut the upper and bobbin threads with a button, or program thread cutting at the end of applicable stitching.
  • Advanced needle threading: A lever-assisted system guides the upper thread through the needle eye.
  • Electronic speed control: Slow the machine down for detailed work or increase the speed for longer seams, up to 850 stitches per minute.
  • Start/stop sewing: Sew without the foot controller when preferred; a foot controller is also included.
  • Seven-point feed system: The long feed dogs support consistent fabric movement across a range of common sewing projects.
  • Quick-set horizontal bobbin: Drop the bobbin into place and follow the marked threading path for a faster start.
  • Free arm and drop feed: Work around cuffs and trouser legs, or lower the feed dogs for suitable free-motion techniques.
  • Twin-needle mode: A twin needle and extra spool pin are included for compatible parallel stitching and decorative effects.
  • Hard cover included: Helps protect the machine between projects and during transport.

Designed for Garment Sewing, Crafts and Quilting

Garment Making and Alterations

The A150 offers the practical stitches required for seams, hems, stretch fabrics, overcasting, blind hems, zips, buttonholes and button attachment. Adjustable stitch width and length let you refine the result for the fabric and technique, while the free arm provides easier access when sewing sleeves, cuffs and other tubular pieces.

Decorative Sewing and Personalisation

Combine compatible decorative or character stitches, mirror selected patterns and save favourite combinations to the machine’s memory. These functions are useful for creating borders, stitched labels, monograms and repeated decorative details without entering the sequence again for every project.

Patchwork and Domestic Quilting

Built-in quilting and appliqué stitches make the A150 suitable for patchwork, quilt piecing and smaller quilting projects. Feed dogs can be lowered manually for free-motion work when the appropriate optional quilting foot is fitted. A walking foot, quilting foot, quilting guide, quarter-inch foot and wide table are optional rather than standard inclusions.

Heavier Domestic Projects

Brother promotes the A150 for sewing bulky layers and heavier fabrics such as denim. Results still depend on the total thickness, seam construction, needle, thread, stitch and feeding technique. Brother’s operating guidance warns against sewing material more than 6 mm thick, so this remains a household sewing machine rather than an industrial or production machine.

Controls That Reduce Repetitive Steps

The A150 can be operated by foot controller or by the machine’s start/stop button. The slide speed control is particularly useful for learners, detailed appliqué, corners and buttonholes because it lets you limit the top sewing speed independently of foot pressure.

Needle up/down control lets you choose where the needle stops, making it easier to pivot fabric or maintain your position while repositioning a project. The lock-stitch and automatic reverse/reinforcement options secure compatible stitches, while the automatic cutter trims both threads after sewing.

The LCD and sensor-touch keypad provide direct access to stitches and settings. A presser-foot and needle-exchange lock disables the operation keys and buttons while you change the needle, replace a foot or work around the needle area.

Needle, Bobbin and Accessory Compatibility

  • Bobbins: Use Brother SA156/SFB-type plastic bobbins, part reference XA5539-151/SFB, with an 11.5 mm height. Brother advises against substituting a different bobbin type.
  • Needles: The operating manual specifies home sewing-machine needles from size 65/9 to 100/16. Select the needle according to the fabric and thread rather than using one needle for every project.
  • Thread: Brother lists thread from 30 to 90 weight and warns against using thread of 20 weight or lower.
  • Knit fabrics: Use an appropriate ballpoint needle and a suitable stretch stitch. Avoid stretching the fabric as it passes under the foot.
  • Twin needle: Use the supported 2/11 twin needle, select twin-needle mode and thread the needles manually. The automatic needle threader must not be used with the twin needle.
  • Optional quilting accessories: Compatible options listed by Brother include a walking foot, quilting foot, quilting guide, quarter-inch piecing feet and wide table. Confirm the exact Brother foot or part code before ordering.
  • Leather and vinyl: Brother recommends an optional walking foot or non-stick foot for materials that may drag or adhere to a standard presser foot. Always test the full fabric, thread, needle and foot combination on a scrap first.

Is the Brother A150 Right for You?

The A150 is a strong choice if you want:

  • A full-sized computerised machine for home sewing
  • More stitch and lettering choice than an entry-level machine
  • Automatic needle threading and thread cutting
  • Adjustable speed for learning and detailed work
  • Garment, craft and domestic quilting capability in one machine
  • A manageable 6.6 kg machine with a protective hard cover
  • A useful range of feet and accessories included from the beginning

Consider a different machine if you primarily need:

  • Hooped machine embroidery or imported embroidery designs
  • A very large throat space for frequent large-quilt manoeuvring
  • An included walking foot, quilting foot or extension table
  • Continuous industrial, production or upholstery work
  • Sideways fabric feeding or a knee lifter

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Brother Innov-is A150 suitable for a beginner?

Yes. Its quick-set bobbin, one-action needle threader, speed limiter, start/stop button and LCD-guided stitch selection make it approachable for a beginner. It also offers enough advanced functions to remain useful as sewing skills develop.

Can the Brother A150 sew denim?

Yes, the machine can sew denim and other heavier domestic fabrics when the correct needle, thread, stitch length and technique are used. Brother warns against sewing material more than 6 mm thick, so bulky seam intersections should be approached carefully and the machine should not be treated as an industrial model.

Is the Brother A150 an embroidery machine?

No. It is a computerised sewing and quilting machine, not a hooped embroidery machine. It can sew decorative patterns and built-in lettering, but it cannot import embroidery files or produce large filled embroidery designs.

Does it sew names and letters?

Yes. It has four built-in lettering styles, including three alphabet styles and one Japanese character style. These are sewn as stitch patterns and can be combined and saved for labels, names and decorative text.

Does the A150 cut the thread automatically?

Yes. The thread-cutter button trims the upper and bobbin threads. Automatic thread cutting can also be selected for compatible sewing sequences.

Can I use it without the foot pedal?

Yes. The machine has a start/stop button and adjustable speed slider, allowing it to sew without the foot controller. A foot controller is included if traditional pedal operation is preferred.

Does the Brother A150 include a walking foot or quilting foot?

No. The standard box contains seven general sewing feet, but a walking foot and free-motion quilting foot are optional accessories. A wide extension table is also optional.

Can it do free-motion quilting?

Yes. The feed dogs can be lowered manually for free-motion work, but an appropriate optional quilting foot is required. Brother recommends using the foot controller and maintaining a consistent relationship between sewing speed and fabric movement.

Which bobbins fit the Brother Innov-is A150?

Use Brother SA156/SFB-style plastic bobbins with an 11.5 mm height, including the XA5539-151/SFB reference listed in the manual. Bobbins that look similar may have different dimensions, so compatibility should be checked before use.

What needle system does the A150 use?

It uses standard home sewing-machine needles. Brother specifies sizes from 65/9 through 100/16, with the needle size and point chosen to match the fabric and thread.

Can the automatic needle threader be used with the included twin needle?

No. The twin needles must be threaded manually. Twin-needle mode must also be switched on, and only stitches approved for twin-needle sewing should be selected.

How large and heavy is the Brother A150?

The manufacturer lists dimensions of approximately 419 x 196 x 307 mm and a machine weight of approximately 6.6 kg. Its compact format and included hard cover make it practical for home storage or transport to sewing groups and classes.

What warranty is provided in Australia?

Brother Australia lists five years of cover on electrical and electronic parts, excluding the foot control, and three years on mechanical parts. Warranty eligibility and conditions are subject to Brother Australia’s terms.
